How to care for your board

When you purchase a premium board from Meier’s Woodworking Company you will need to periodically treat your board with Meier’s Board Butter or other refinishing compound.

To clean your board, use a damp cloth and mild dishwashing soap to wipe it clean and dry it as soon as possible. Your board is NOT dishwasher safe. As you notice your board beginning to look worn follow the following steps:

  1. Clean surface lightly with soap and water.

  2. Allow the wood to completely dry.

  3. Apply a liberal coat of Meier’s Board Butter to the entire board

  4. Allow a minimum of 2 hours for the product to soak in.

  5. Remove any excess wax with a dry cotton cloth and buff to a satin finish.

  6. Repeat these steps every 10-15 washes or as your board begins to show wear.

Common questions about board care

What oil can I use on my board? Only use mineral oil to recondition your board. Other oils do expire and will eventually go rancid.

How can I remove a stain? To remove a stain lightly sand the board with lemon juice and fine grit sandpaper. After the board has dried treat with Meier’s Board Butter.

Can I cut chicken on my wood board? Cutting chicken on your board is perfectly fine as long as the board has been properly maintained.

How do I remove a deep scratche? Use a fine grit sandpaper to buff out the scratch. Only sand in the direction of the grain, clean off the dust and treat with Meier’s Board Butter.

How do I remove an odor from my board? Cut a lemon in half, dip it in salt and scrub the board to eliminate the odor. Apply a coating of protective oil and Meier’s Board Butter to prevent it from happening again.
